| A purification technique in which a heating coil is passed slowly from one end of a solid (such as a metal, an alloy or a metalloid) to the other. The solid melts locally, and the impurities dissolve in the molten zone. When the heating coil moves to another part of the solid, the impurities remain in the molten zone, and accumulate at one end, which is then discarded. The technique is used to produce ultra-pure silicon and germanium for semiconductor use (which are often then intentionally made impure again by doping). |
