zinc blende structure

An important crystal structure (see the diagram) shown by zinc blende, a sulphide ore of zinc, ZnS. The structure has the sulphur atoms in an array with cubic close packing, with the zinc atoms in half of the tetrahedral holes. This is closely related to the wurtzite structure, except that the sulphur atom array is the other close-packed form. Examples of compounds with the zinc blende structure include silicon carbide, SiC, and boron nitride, BN.
