Ziegler-Natta catalysts |
| |
| The catalyst system used in the production of polymers such as high-density polythene. The catalyst is a mixture of two compounds. One of them is a titanium compound (typically titanium(IV) chloride, TiCl{TAG(tag=>sub)}4{TAG}) together with an aluminium trialkyl such as triethylaluminium, Al(CH{TAG(tag=>sub)}2{TAG}CH{TAG(tag=>sub)}3{TAG}){TAG(tag=>sub)}3{TAG}. The catalysts can be subtly modified to produce a stereoregular polymer. Named after Karl Ziegler (1898-1973) and Giulio Natta (1903-79). |
