|
| Symbol Xe. The element with atomic number 54 and relative atomic mass 131.3, which is a colourless odourless gas present at approximately 1 ppm in the atmosphere. It is a member of the noble gases and, as such, is highly unreactive. The name for the group was, however, altered from ‘inert’ gases to ‘noble’ gases because in 1962 Neil Bartlett managed to get xenon to react (See dioxygenyl ion). Subsequently a fairly rich xenon chemistry has been discovered, including several fluorides such as XeF{TAG(tag=>sub)}2{TAG}, XeF{TAG(tag=>sub)}4{TAG} and XeF{TAG(tag=>sub)}6{TAG}, a couple of oxides such as XeO{TAG(tag=>sub)}3{TAG}, as well as other compounds such as XeOF{TAG(tag=>sub)}4{TAG} and XeCl{TAG(tag=>sub)}2{TAG}. |
