X-ray absorption spectroscopy

A form of spectroscopy in which a beam of X- rays of variable frequency from a synchrotron radiation source is directed at a sample and the absorption of the X-rays as a function of frequency is measured. Steps or ‘edges’ in the spectrum occur at the frequencies that correspond to transitions between atomic levels. An analysis of the fine structure of the edges allows the distances between the absorbing atom and its neighbours to be calculated, and this can be used to find the structure of the sample. This latter technique is known as extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS).
