The treatment of rubber with, most commonly, sulphur. The sulphur produces cross-links between some of the double bonds in the molecule. The resulting material is much more elastic and less sticky than the original unvulcanized rubber. This treatment, first introduced by Charles Goodyear in 1839 (but patented by Thomas Hancock in 1843, one month before Goodyear), expanded the usefulness of rubber greatly.
