variance

The square of the standard deviation, usually denoted by σ{TAG(tag=>sup)}2{TAG}. The variance of a discrete random variable X is ∑{TAG(tag=>sub)}x{TAG} (x -μ){TAG(tag=>sup)}2{TAG}P(X = x), where μ is its mean and P(X = x) is the probability that X takes the value x; the variance of a continuous random variable is ∫(x - μ){TAG(tag=>sup)}2{TAG}f(x) dx, whereμ is its mean and f(x) is its probability density function.
