Van Allen belts (radiation belts)

Belts of plasma surrounding the Earth that emit intense radiation. Some charged particles, mostly electrons and protons, from the solar wind are trapped by the Earth\'s magnetic field as they pass and accumulate in two doughnut-shaped zones. The movement of the particles within the zones causes them to emit electromagnetic radiation. Named after James Alfred Van Allen (b. 1914).See aurora; magnetosphere.
