tunnel effect

  
   
The passage of a particle through a potential barrier that, classically, it would not have enough energy to surmount. In quantum mechanics there is a small amplitude of the wavefunction for the particle on the other side of the barrier, and the particle appears to be able to tunnel through the barrier.
