transistor

A semiconductor device with three electrodes, which has almost completely superseded the thermionic valve as a circuit-controlling device. In general, a small voltage or current applied to one pair of electrodes is used to adjust another current flowing between a different pair. There are two major categories: the bipolar junction transistor; and the field-effect transistor. Transistors can be incorporated in integrated circuits, where they act as switches or amplifiers. Their increasing miniaturization has been the driving force behind advances in the processing speeds of digital computers.
