threshold

In general, a value of a quantity beyond which the behaviour of a system changes abruptly in some way. For example, in the photoelectric effect the threshold frequency corresponds to the energy of photons falling on a metal surface that is just enough for the electrons of highest energy in the solid to escape (See work function).See nerve impulse.
