tetrahedral

A shape resembling a tetrahedron, which is very common throughout chemistry. In the gas phase, this is the usual structure adopted by molecules with four bonding pairs of electrons (See valence-shell electron-pair repulsion theory), such as methane, tetrachloromethane, etc. The tetrahedral angle between the bonds is 109° 28\'. In the solid state tetrahedral holes are important for many structures including the fluorite structure. See Also: spinel.
