Symbol Sr. The element with atomic number 38 and relative atomic mass 87.62 (named after the village Strontian in Scotland), which is in Group 2 of the periodic table, below calcium. Chemically, strontium resembles calcium in having just one dominant oxidation number, +2, as in its carbonate ore strontianite, SrCO{TAG(tag=>sub)}3{TAG}, or its sulphate ore celestine, SrSO{TAG(tag=>sub)}4{TAG}.
