spinal cord

The extension of the brain forming part of the nervous system of vertebrates which runs along the dorsal part of the body, surrounded by the vertebral column. The spinal cord is a major tract of nervous tissue carrying nerve impulses to and from the brain and along reflex arcs. The cell bodies of most of the neurones in the spinal cord lie in the central region and form the grey matter. The axons form the outer zone, and appear as a distinct zone of white matter.
