species

1
(Biol.) A population of individuals that share a high degree of common characters and interbreed freely to form fertile offspring. There may be one or many species within a genus. However, the definition is not straightforward since under certain circumstances some species can interbreed to form fertile hybrids (See hybridization (2)). Since evolution is a continuous process, the boundaries between species should be expected not to be absolute.

2
(Chem.) A general term that can be used to mean a set of chemically identical atoms, molecules, ions, etc.
