solution

The homogeneous mixture of a solute, which can be a solid or a liquid or a gas, dissolved in a solvent. The most important solvent is water and aqueous solutions abound (See solubility; solubility product). For covalent compounds, such as organic solids, good solvents are those with high dispersion forces, such as tetrachloromethane, ethoxyethane, benzene, methylbenzene, etc. Two other important solvents are ethanol and propanone. The solute can be separated from the solution usually by evaporation of the solvent. Solvents do not have to be liquid: a solid solution can exist.
