(Astron.) A smaller body orbiting a larger one, usually a planet. For example, the Moon is the satellite of the Earth. An artificial satellite is an unmanned space vehicle designed to orbit a larger body, usually the Earth. Earth satellites are used for remote sensing, navigation and communications.

(Phys.) In spectroscopy, a smaller line that appears at an energy or frequency slightly different from the main line.
