radical (free radical)

  
   
A species containing at least one unpaired electron. Perhaps the most common examples are halogen atoms created during chlorination of organic compounds. During the reaction, organic radicals (such as methyl radical CH{TAG(tag=>sub)}3{TAG}•) are formed. The dot is a reminder that the species is a radical. Other gaseous radicals include nitrogen oxide, NO, which has an odd total number of electrons, and, more surprisingly, oxygen, O{TAG(tag=>sub)}2{TAG}.See chain reaction.
