(Phys.) Symbol P; unit watt, W. The rate of transfer of energy between one system and another. For example, the rate at which a car\'s engine turns the chemical energy of the fuel into mechanical energy to drive the car is the power of the engine (a 1.8 litre petrol engine typically produces 90 kW); the rate at which a light bulb turns electrical energy into heat and light is the power (consumption) of the light bulb, given by the voltage multiplied by the current.
