phosphorus pentachloride (phosphorus(v) chloride)

 
   
PC1{TAG(tag=>sub)}5{TAG} A white solid used as a chlorinating agent in organic chemistry. Its gaseous structure is trigonal bipyramidal, as predicted by valence-shell electron-pair repulsion theory. The solid, however, is composed of the ions PC1{TAG(tag=>sub)}4{TAG}{TAG(tag=>sup)}+{TAG} and PC1{TAG(tag=>sub)}6{TAG}{TAG(tag=>sup)}-{TAG}.
