(Chem.) A horizontal row in the periodic table, sometimes labelled with the principal quantum number of the orbital filled in the s block in the period, such as period 3 for the elements sodium to argon. This consists of elements with successive atomic numbers, which are unlike each other in fundamental ways, and so the connection is less important than the vertical columns, the groups, which contain elements that are similar. The term first short period refers to the elements from lithium to neon and the term second short period refers to the elements from sodium to argon.See Appendix table 5.
