paramagnetism

One of the principal types of magnetism, a moderate attraction into a magnetic field, caused by the presence of unpaired electrons. Paramagnetic substances have a small positive magnetic susceptibility. Paramagnetism is very uncommon in the gas phase, although two simple molecules, NO and O{TAG(tag=>sub)}2{TAG}, are paramagnetic, as are radicals. The phenomenon is most common in solutions of many transition metal compounds, where the unpaired electrons arise because several orbitals lie at the same energy level. Strongly paramagnetic species include high-spin d{TAG(tag=>sup)}5{TAG} complexes such as [Mn(H{TAG(tag=>sub)}2{TAG}O){TAG(tag=>sub)}6{TAG}]{TAG(tag=>sup)}2+{TAG}.See Pauli paramagnetism.
