parallel-transport

A method of extending the concept of ‘parallel’ into curved spaces and spacetimes. A vector at point A can be moved along a curve in the space such that at each successive point on the curve the vector is parallel to the corresponding vector at the previous point. Only in flat spaces will the parallel vector at some point B always be independent of the route taken from A to B. For example, let point A be on the equator at the prime meridian (0°N 0°E) and point B at 0°N 90°E. We can construct the vector at B parallel to a vector pointing east at A. If we move along the equator, the vector still points east at B. However, if we move up the prime meridian to the North Pole, the parallel vector will point down the 90° meridian at the pole, and will remain pointing south as we move down to B.
