oxide

A compound with oxygen. Various classifications are possible. First, binary oxides contain only one other element, whereas mixed oxides, such as barium titanate, contain at least two others. Second, oxides can be classified according to their acid-base nature. Acidic oxides react with alkalis. Basic oxides react with acids. Amphoteric oxides react with both acids and alkalis. Neutral oxides react with neither. Nonmetals tend to form acidic oxides whereas metals tend to form either basic oxides (which may be alkaline) or amphoteric oxides. Metalloids tend to form amphoteric oxides.
