organometallic chemistry

Compounds that contain organic (i.e. carbon- containing) groups attached to metals. Important examples include the antiknock agent tetraethyllead, the Ziegler-Natta catalyst triethylaluminium and the important synthetic intermediates the Grignard reagents, along with more esoteric compounds, such as ferrocene. Vitamin B {TAG(tag=>sub)}12{TAG} can also be so classified. This area of chemistry, which straddles the traditional division into organic and inorganic chemistry, has grown enormously in the last twenty years.
