nuclear reactor |
| |
| A plant for generating energy using nuclear reactions, currently only by nuclear fission, but in the future possibly also by nuclear fusion. Nuclear fission reactors come in many different forms. Their common features include nuclear fuel stored in a core, moderators, coolant systems, turbines and containment vessels. A fast reactor has the advantage of generating more fissionable material from a blanket of natural uranium surrounding the core. The hope of clean energy envisioned at the start of the nuclear reactor project has faded as the problem of nuclear fuel reprocessing has been reinforced by the accidents at Three Mile Island and at Chernobyl. Nevertheless, the nuclear industry has a reasonable safety record and countries such as France remain heavily dependent on nuclear reactors. |
