nitrating mixture

A mixture of concentrated nitric and sulphuric acids that is used to introduce the nitro group, -NO{TAG(tag=>sub)}2{TAG}, into a molecule. A classic example is the conversion of benzene, C{TAG(tag=>sub)}6{TAG}H{TAG(tag=>sub)}6{TAG}, into nitrobenzene, C{TAG(tag=>sub)}6{TAG}H{TAG(tag=>sub)}5{TAG}NO{TAG(tag=>sub)}2{TAG}. The electrophile in this reaction has been shown to be the NO{TAG(tag=>sub)}2{TAG}{TAG(tag=>sup)}+{TAG} ion.
