neural network (neural net) |
| |
| In computing, a processing structure inspired by biological neural networks in the brain. Neural networks are a growing area in artificial intelligence research since they are successful at the same sort of pattern recognition processes as the brain, such as those involved in seeing and hearing. The networks are not explicitly programmed. Instead, they are trained. Presented with examples of input, a suitable learning algorithm adjusts the weightings applied to the signals between the simulated neurones, until the output gradually approaches the correct form. Once trained, the net has built up its own internal representation of its area of knowledge and it can recognize unknown or incomplete examples of input. |
