neptunium

 
   
Symbol Np. The element with atomic number 93 and most stable isotope 237, which is the first of the transuranium elements, discovered in the debris of the first nuclear explosion and since made in nuclear reactors. Uranium was named after Uranus, so the next planet from the Sun was the source of neptunium\'s name. Its chemistry is dominated by its radioactivity. The most interesting of its many oxidation numbers is the strongly oxidizing +7 state.
