NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, coenzyme I) |
| |
A coenzyme which participates in many redox reactions in biological systems. It is particularly important in certain reactions of the Krebs cycle that involve dehydrogenation. The nicotinamide ring of NAD{TAG(tag=>sup)}+{TAG} accepts a hydrogen atom plus an electron (a hydride ion, H{TAG(tag=>sup)}-{TAG}) forming NADH. The ring is no longer stable, and therefore the added hydride ion is easily transferred to other molecules. Subsequent reoxidation of NADH by the electron-transport chain is linked to the formation of ATP. See the diagram.
