An important piece of information about a step in a reaction, giving the number of species (not necessarily molecules) present in the step. The rate- limiting step of an S{TAG(tag=>sub)}N{TAG}2 reaction (See nucleophilic substitution), for example, is bimolecular (signified by the 2), so two species react in that step.
