| A field that is concentrated around electric currents, magnetic dipoles and permanent magnets and determines their effect on, in particular, moving charges (see diagram at field). Two different physical quantities, both vectors, are associated with a magnetic field: the magnetic flux density B is the more fundamental of the two, but for historical reasons the magnetic field strength H takes the name that seems more closely related to the phenomenon itself. In the absence of magnetization the two are related by B = μ{TAG(tag=>sub)}0{TAG}H, where μ{TAG(tag=>sub)}0{TAG} is the permeability of free space.See Lorentz force. |
