low-energy electron diffraction (LEED)

A technique used to determine the structure of a surface at the atomic scale by diffraction of a plane wave of electrons. The diffraction pattern can be related to the geometry of the surface. Qualitatively, it is useful for finding the symmetry axes of a surface, and quantitatively it can yield information on bond distances and a detailed geometric reconstruction of the surface. A typical beam energy of 100 eV gives a wavelength of the electrons of about 0.1 nm.
