lanthanide (lanthanoid, lanthanon, rare earth)

 
   
Common symbol Ln. One of the fourteen elements following lanthanum in the periodic table. They are very similar to each other; in every case their most common oxidation number is +3. Many were first discovered in two oxides found near Ytterby in Sweden. The atoms and ions gradually shrink as the atomic number rises since the added electrons do not shield the extra positive charge fully (See effective nuclear charge). This lanthanide contraction is crucial to the separation of the Ln{TAG(tag=>sup)}3+{TAG} ions by ion-exchange chromatography.See Appendix table 5.
