Lamarckism |
| |
| The 19th-century rival of the theory of evolution by natural selection which claimed that organisms are capable of passing on to their offspring characteristics they have acquired during their lifetime. For example, if a mouse\'s tail were cut off, it would be possible for its offspring to have shorter tails. Lamarckism now has no scientific credibility and is not supported by modern experimental genetics. Named after Jean-Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Lamarck (1744-1829). |
