Symbol Z; unit Ω. In general, the property, expressible as a complex number, of a simple linear system that relates the amplitude and phase (2) of its response to the amplitude and phase of a stimulus. Specifically in electrical systems, it is the complex quantity Z that relates the applied voltage V and current I, both in complex form (See complex number): V= ZI.A capacitor has an impedance 1/iωC, an inductance iωL and a resistance R,where ω is the angular frequency of the current or voltage. As with resistances in a d.c. circuit, if two or more impedances are in series (3), their impedances add; if in parallel (4) their reciprocals add:
