identical twins (monozygotic twins)

The result of the fertilization of an egg by a sperm and the subsequent division of the zygote into two cells each of which develops into two independent embryos. Since each of the cells derived from the zygote has the same genome, the resultant individuals will be identical to each other. Compare fraternal twins.
