hydrogen overvoltage (hydrogen overpotential)

 
   
The excess voltage over and above that predicted using the standard electrode potential required to produce a reasonable rate of evolution of hydrogen gas during electrolysis. Electrolysis of an aqueous solution is likely to produce hydrogen gas, as the hydrogen ion is more easily reduced than the ions from most metals (See standard electrode potential). However, the need for two atoms to meet and bond to form H{TAG(tag=>sub)}2{TAG} provides a kinetic barrier to evolution of the gas.
