gamma decay

The mode of radioactive decay (See radioactivity) in which gamma rays are emitted. Neither the atomic number nor the nucleon number of the nuclide changes in this form of decay; the nuclide merely releases energy as a photon in a transition from an excited state to, usually, its ground state.
