fractional crystallization

A separation technique that utilizes the small difference in solubility between two solids. If a solution of the two is cooled, crystallization will concentrate one of them preferentially. The most famous application of the technique was Marie Curie\'s separation of radium from barium by 4000 fractional crystallizations of the sulphates.
