fast reactor (fast breeder reactor)

A nuclear reactor without a moderator, in which nuclear fission is induced by a fast neutron rather than a thermal neutron. The fuel is about 20% plutonium ({TAG(tag=>sup)}239{TAG}Pu), and more plutonium is generated in the reactor (hence ‘breeder’). A fast reactor can use a much greater proportion (typically 75%) of the energy in its fuel than can a thermal reactor (1%).
