Fajans' rules

Rules that allow qualitative estimates of the extent of covalent bonding present in formally ionic compounds. For the cation, covalent character increases with increasing charge density. For the anion, covalent character increases with increased polarizability, which increases with the number of electrons. So for an isoelectronic series such as NaF, MgO, AlN, SiC, the covalent character increases to the right; by AlN the ionic model provides a very poor description of the bonding. Named after Kasimir Fajans (1887-1975).
