ethanoyl chloride (acetyl chloride)

CH{TAG(tag=>sub)}3{TAG}COCl The acyl chloride with two carbon atoms, which is a colourless liquid which fumes because of its rapid hydrolysis in moist air. The vapour is lachrymatory as a similar hydrolysis reaction occurs in the water round the eye, forming ethanoic acid. Ethanoyl chloride is a very important ethanoylating agent.
