(Chem.) A substance that cannot be broken down into two or more substances by any means. All elements contain atoms which have just one atomic number, although the masses can vary (See isotope). The elements are listed in the periodic table in order of their atomic numbers.See Appendix table 5.

(Math.) A member of a set. The notation a ∈ A means that a is an element of the set A

(Math.) An individual entry of a matrix.

(Math.) The expression following an integral sign. Thus in ʃ y dx, the expression y dx is an element of area. It is often helpful to think of the area represented by the integral as a ‘sum’ of the elements.
