E. coli

The bacterium Escherichia coli.It is a common gut bacterium, some types of which cause forms of food poisoning. A large number of physiologically and genetically defined strains are known, and it is commonly used in laboratory studies. Its historical significance is that work on the nutritional requirements of a range of mutants in the 1950s led to the establishment of the relationship between genes and specific cellular functions. E. coli is now routinely used in genetic engineering. The cells have a single circular chromosome consisting of a double strand of DNA containing approximately 4.5 million base pairs (See base pairing). This has been extensively investigated and mapped, and the exact positions of over a thousand genes have been located.
