|
| An acute and highly infectious disease caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae, which infects the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract producing a powerful toxin, particularly in children. Inflammation of the membranes can cause asphyxiation and the toxin affects the heart and nervous system. Childhood vaccination stimulates the body to produce anti-toxin, providing immunity. |
