deficiency disease |
| |
| A disease characterized by pathological symptoms caused by a lack of an essential factor in the diet. Such factors include vitamins (e.g. a lack of vitamin C leads to scurvy, a disease of the gums) and essential minerals, (e.g. a lack of iron causes anaemia). Deficiency diseases also occur in plants, where they are commonly due to mineral deficiencies in the soil (e.g. a lack of iron or magnesium produces chlorotic (yellow) leaves because these elements are required in the synthesis of chlorophyll). |
