decomposer

An organism whose mode of nutrition assists in the process of decay, particularly in the recycling of elements such as carbon and nitrogen in nature. Decomposers are heterotrophic, and include saprotrophs such as bacteria and fungi. However the term is frequently extended to include all organisms in the vitally important ‘decomposer food chain’ which are responsible for the physical and chemical breakdown of dead organisms. The breakdown of sewage and the making of garden compost are among the activities of decomposers. See Also: ecosystem.
