damping

A force opposing the motion of a body that is oscillating (or would be oscillating in the absence of damping). It may be a consequence of the environment through which the body is moving (as in air damping) or deliberately introduced to prevent oscillation (as with a dash-pot). Damping causes simple harmonic motion to become damped harmonic motion. The concept of damping is often generalized to the other situations in which a similar equation is found; for example, in electronics a resistance may damp an LC circuit.
