A species formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements. The compound iron(II) sulphide has very different properties from a mixture of iron and sulphur. For example, the mixture can be separated by a magnet; the compound cannot. Dilute hydrochloric acid reacts with iron in the mixture to give hydrogen gas; it reacts with the compound to form hydrogen sulphide gas.
